Is Use Emoji free?
Yes. The emoji picker is free forever, with no account and no limits. Typing :emoji: codes on websites comes with 30 free replacements, and you can keep 3 custom codes for free. Pro removes both limits for $5 a month, $25 a year or $39 once.
How do I type an emoji with a code like :fire:?
Turn Use Emoji on for the site you’re writing on, then type a colon and the emoji’s name. A list of matches opens after two letters: pick one with the arrow keys and Enter, or type the closing colon and :fire: turns into 🔥 on the spot. Undo right after gives you the code back.
Which websites does :emoji: typing work on?
On every site you turn it on for, in plain text boxes and rich editors: Gmail, Slack, Discord, X, LinkedIn, Reddit, Notion and more. Editors that draw text on a canvas, such as Google Docs, aren’t supported, and password fields and code editors are skipped on purpose.
Why does it ask for access to a website?
Typing :emoji: changes text inside a page, and your browser allows that only on websites you approve. Use Emoji asks once for each site you turn on, never at install, and leaves every other site untouched. You can take a site back any time in Settings, under Sites. The popup picker needs no permission at all.
What does Use Emoji do with what I type?
Nothing you type leaves your browser. Codes are matched on your computer against a list that ships with the extension. Our server sees your sign-in and your Stripe checkout if you buy Pro, a count of the free replacements you’ve used, and a handful of usage events, such as which site you turned typing on for. It never sees your text, the pages you visit or what your custom codes contain.
Which browsers does it work in?
Chrome and other Chromium browsers such as Edge, Brave, Opera and Arc, on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS, all installed from the Chrome Web Store. Pro is tied to your account, so signing in on another computer turns it on there too.
What are kaomoji, and can I type them?
Kaomoji are Japanese emoticons drawn with text characters, like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ or (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻. Use Emoji knows 2,356 of them, plus arrows, currency signs, math and other symbols: 2,714 codes in all. Type :meh: for the shrug or :tableflip: for the table flip, or copy them from the popup’s Kaomoji & symbols tab.
Can I make my own codes?
Yes. Save anything up to 64 characters behind a code you choose, such as :sig: for your email sign-off or :addr: for your address, and it types out wherever :emoji: typing works. Your codes stay in your browser, and you can export and import them as a file. 3 are free, and Pro keeps as many as you like.
Is there a keyboard shortcut for the emoji picker?
Yes. Alt+Shift+E opens the picker from any tab (⌥⇧E on a Mac), and Alt+Shift+I switches :emoji: typing off and on. You can change both in your browser’s extension shortcut settings.
How is it different from the emoji panel built into Windows or macOS?
The built-in panels are good: press Windows + . (period) on Windows, or Control + Command + Space on a Mac. Use Emoji adds what they don’t have: the same picker on every computer you use Chrome on, codes that turn into emoji as you type, 2,714 kaomoji and symbols, and shortcuts of your own.
Can I cancel Pro any time?
Yes. Open Settings, go to Account and choose Manage subscription to cancel in the Stripe billing portal. Pro stays on until the end of the period you’ve paid for. Lifetime is a single payment and never renews.
