How to use the emoji keyboard

    Click any emoji in the keyboard and it goes in where your cursor is. Search by name, or jump to a category with the tabs.

    Or type a code

    Type a colon and two letters, like :ta, and pick from the list with the arrow keys and Enter. Or finish the code, :tada:, and it turns into ๐ŸŽ‰ by itself.

    Copy and paste

    Press Copy and paste your message into WhatsApp, Instagram, Gmail or any other app. Your recent emoji wait at the top for next time.

The emoji keyboard already on your devices

Every computer and phone has an emoji panel of its own. Here is how to open each one.

Mac Control+Command+Space or ๐ŸŒ fn Opens Emoji & Symbols. What the ๐ŸŒ fn key does is set in System Settings, under Keyboard.
Chromebook Search+Shift+Space Or right-click in a text box and choose Emoji.
Linux (GNOME) Ctrl+. or Ctrl+; Opens the emoji picker in GTK apps, such as GNOMEโ€™s own.
iPhone and iPad ๐Ÿ˜€ or ๐ŸŒ The key left of the space bar switches the keyboard to emoji, with a search box on top.
Android ๐Ÿ˜€ The emoji key on your keyboard switches it to emoji. Where it sits depends on the keyboard app.
Chrome, with Use Emoji Alt+Shift+E Opens the Use Emoji picker on any tab (โŒฅโ‡งE on a Mac). On the sites you turn on, :codes: turn into emoji as you type.

How do I use an emoji keyboard on my computer?
Use this page: click emoji or type codes like :fire:, then copy your message. Or open the panel built into your system: Windows + . (period) on Windows, Control + Command + Space on a Mac, and Search + Shift + Space on a Chromebook.
Can I type emoji with codes like :smile:?
Yes. Type a colon and a few letters and pick from the list, or close the code and it converts: :smile: gives ๐Ÿ˜„. These are the same short names Slack, Discord and GitHub use. To type them in any text box on the web, add Use Emoji and turn it on for the sites you write on.
Why do emoji look different after I paste them?
An emoji is a character, and each system draws it in its own style: Apple, Google, Microsoft and Samsung each have their own artwork. The emoji you send is the same one, and the person you send it to sees it the way their device draws it.
Why do flags show as two letters?
Windows doesnโ€™t draw country flags, so it shows the two letters a flag is made of, like JP for ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต. The flag itself is still there: paste it on a phone or a Mac and it shows as a flag.
Is it free, and does it keep what I type?
Itโ€™s free, with no sign-up. What you type stays in your browser and is never sent anywhere. The keyboard remembers only your recent emoji and your skin tone, in this browser.
Which emoji does it have?
All 1,870 emoji that Use Emoji has, in eight categories, with six skin tones for the people and hands that come in them. It is the set from Unicodeโ€™s Emoji 15.0, the same one the Use Emoji picker shows.
