Typing symbols from the keyboard

Three ways to type a symbol without copying it, and what each one reaches.

Windows: Alt codes

Hold Alt, type 0 and the symbol’s number on the numeric keypad, then let go of Alt. They cover the symbols of the Windows-1252 character set, such as ° © ™ € £ and ½, which is why many symbols here have none.

Mac: the Option key

Hold Option (⌥), or Option and Shift, and press a key: ⌥ G gives ©, ⌥ 2 gives ™, ⌥ ⇧ 8 gives °. The Mac column shows every symbol here that the US keyboard layout types this way.

Anywhere: Use Emoji codes

Every symbol on this page has a short code in Use Emoji, and most are the HTML names you may know: :rarr: for →, :hellip: for …, :sect: for §. Type one in any text box on the sites you turn on.

How do I type the degree symbol (°)?
On Windows, hold Alt and type 0176 on the numeric keypad. On a Mac, press Option + Shift + 8. In HTML, write °. With Use Emoji, type :deg: on any site you turn on, or :degc: for °C.
How do I type a check mark ✓?
There is no Alt code or Option key for it, so copy ✓ or ✔ from this page. In Use Emoji, :tick: types ✓ and :tickb: types the heavy ✔. The green ✅ is an emoji rather than a symbol, and its code is :white_check_mark:.
What’s the difference between a text symbol and an emoji?
A text symbol like ♥ or ✓ is drawn in the font of the text around it, in its colour. An emoji like ❤️ or ✅ is a small colour picture. A few characters can be either: ♥ followed by an invisible style marker (U+FE0F) shows as the emoji ♥️.
Why don’t Alt codes work on my laptop?
Alt codes need the numbers on a numeric keypad, with Num Lock on; the number keys above the letters do not work. Without a keypad, press Windows + . and open the Symbols tab, use the Character Map app, copy the symbol from this page, or type its code with Use Emoji.
Why does a symbol show up as an empty box?
The device showing it has no font that draws that character, so it shows a placeholder box. The symbols on this page are in the fonts of every current system, but an older phone or a rare font may lack a few.
Can I use these symbols in Instagram bios and usernames?
In bios, posts and messages, yes: they are ordinary Unicode text and paste anywhere text goes. Usernames are different, since most apps allow only letters, numbers and a few marks there.
